Hiking sticks can be used for so much more then light hiking. A newly popular activity is skijoring in which a person is pulled by a dog, horse, or other animal willing to do all the hard work. The person is carried on skis and is tasked with keeping their balance while moving at speeds controlled by their animal friend. This is where the hiking sticks come into play. Instead of solely depending on their own counter balancing and shifting weight, the person can use one or two hiking sticks as an extension of their arm to push back from the ground when they feel too much weight shifting to one side. Skijoring is a great way to get a full body exercise for you and your animal friend. Happy Hiking!

Bring in Spring with some hiking in Minneapolis! Grab your hiking stick and hit the trails. The leaves are blooming and the birds are chirping. Some of the best hiking can be found around Minnehaha Falls. This is one of Minneapolis’s oldest parks that features a 52 foot beautiful waterfall. Around the Falls are bikepaths, disc golf, gardens, volleyball, picnic area, and a restaurant. Be one of the million visitors each year.

A great smile was brought to my face today when a customer emailed me a huge cane reaction about the Sassafras Hiking Stick.
“I had to tell you personally how much my husband LOVES this stick. He had a stroke 12 years ago and whenever we have seen walking sticks in antique shops or other specialty shops here in NY he has wanted one. I always thought it was so random and silly. He couldn’t explain to me why he wanted it (can’t talk very well) and I would always say you have a cane. That’s a lot to pay for something you’ll never use and where are you going to put it. But we started doing easy rail trails recently and somebody had one and I thought hmm….. Then last fall he fell on a trail. He was just badly bruised, but I really wanted to get him one after that, but then we couldn’t find them anywhere — not even online. After seeing this really cool looking one soon after in CA at a little village up in the mountains, and not knowing how to get it home, I tried to get one from them to surprise him, but they wouldn’t respond to my calls or emails. So with new search words — sassafras and whistle, I found yours. Oh, my gosh! It looks exactly the same, but nicer because the wood is rustic and not all shiny like a fancy showpiece. I put a big bow and jingle bells on it and on Chrismas Eve our son came down the stairs with it, and my husband was like a little kid. He was soooo happy! After 48 years of marriage it’s the first time we ever saw him get so genuinely excited about a gift. It was the best! So thank you very much!!! Happy New Year!”

A fresh batch of Vine Canes are all set to get in the hands of our customers. It’s amazing how unique a vine will grow. I’ve never seen any two of these canes look remotely similiar. Each one has crevices at different depths. Each one has branch spurs in all different spots. Each one has a different thickness. Each one has a different color. I think you get my point, “different”. It’s Springtime in Cali. Is everybody getting ready for hiking season? Grab your hiking stick and hit the trails! We took a hike the other day through Tilden Park and it was beautiful weather. It started out uphill and ended downhill, so like most hikes, you need a walking staff sized for all inclines. When you’re going uphill, you want to choke up on the staff and when you’re going downhill, you want to choke down on the staff to make it longer and let it take some stess off your knees.

We ran into a perfect situation when a hiking stick can save your butt. We were going down a rocky cliff right by a stream, so the rocks were very slippery. In these kind of situations, you don’t want to have all your weight and balance on one foot. What you want to do is utilize your staff as a pvot point. Plant the bottom of your staff into a groove in the rocks so that it won’t be able to slip when weight is put on when you’re balancing yourself. Now that you have a balance point, you can continue to go forward without the scare of having all your weight on one foot and slipping. Give it a try and let me know how much more safe you felt. Our newest craftswoman is excited for the holiday season. Right now she’s working on keeping up with orders for the laptop bags. I was amazed to learn about how hard it can be to create these bags while wasted the least amount of the pelt. Anyone love puzzles? It was the first thought that came to my mind. You’ll notice I used the term “craftswoman” and not “artist”. I can’t even begin to count the amount of conversations, articles, and papers that try to define an artist from a craftswoman. She’s an artist, a craftswoman, a seamstress, an entrepreneur, and more. I hope a title doesn’t matter to you, because I know It doesn’t matter to me. We’re very excited to be working with a new leather artist. I still get to do some of the design, but this craftswoman creates amazing leather bags at the flick of his wrist. It’s going to be a big leap for us, but we think new leather products can work in sync with our canes. We’re thinking leather cane grips? Great cushion. Has anyone been taking their fall hikes? Remember that it’s good for your body’s health and mind. As I chat with different people across the US this fall, I’ve been amazed how different seasons can be non-existent is some states. Vegas natives- I hope you always find time to get to the northern states during this time of year. I’ve always heard the most amazing season changes you’ll ever see is out in hiking country of the Pacific Northwest. I can imagine all the brilliant yellows, oranges, and greens. I’ll get some of my fall hiking pics posted this month, but I’d love to see some pics from other outdoor lovers! Cheers, Antonio
